Our football group visited Huddersfield FC today. Read below the report on our visit and take a look on our football page at all the pictures of the fantastic hospitality we received.
Social Eyes take on the Terriers…
In their first season in the brilliant South Yorkshire Ability Counts League, the guys and girls from Social Eyes FC last Friday accepted an invitation by Premier League side Huddersfield Town to make the short trip up to the Kirklees Stadium for a meet and greet day, and as Manager, Claire Hobson told Social Eyes’ Margaret Gregory and TBG’s Colin Muncie, it was a special day for everyone involved.
Thanks to the generosity of Terrier’s Disability Co-Coordinator Isaac Keighley, the team from Rawmarsh headed North in their sponsored minibus for a tour of the Premier Division side’s facilities – and a seven-a-side friendly with Town’s Disability side.
Claire explained, that after a ‘comprehensive’ stadium visit the team were delighted to witness an insight into an early Huddersfield signing. “The ground tour was fantastic,” Claire told us, with the group visiting the changing rooms, Chairman Dean Hoyle’s seat, Manager David Wagner’s dug-out and the corporate areas. The excitement then reached fever pitch as midfielder Jason Puncheon was signed, on loan from Crystal Palace, in the transfer window.”
As regular readers will know, the Social Eyes squad always have their question priorities. “The tour was brilliant with lots of questions – and our Kenny Endicott thought it was of paramount importance to ask how much a pint was!”
After the stadium visit, the real business of the day got under way with the group travelling the short distance to Town’s Leeds Road Training and Leisure facility where they enjoyed their packed lunch before taking on Huddersfield’s disability team. It was agreed to play 7-a-side but it was soon apparent that the ability levels were quite different, but this did not distract from the enjoyment of the game.”
Manager Claire has been working hard to tighten her side up defensively, but the Terriers just had a bit too much for her players on the day. “Although Social Eyes played hard with huge enthusiasm, and did not give in even after conceding, the score finished 5- 0 to Huddersfield,” she told us. “More importantly, friendships were made. A great day for all and Huddersfield will be visiting Social Eyes Training facility for a return fixture. The plan is for them to then visit Social Eyes Community base for a lunch cooked by our very own ‘healthy eating’ group.”
“We hope to network more with Isaac and Huddersfield Town,” Claire told us, “and we look forward to a friendship we will all be proud of. This league is all about friendship in adversity for our young people and we look forward to fostering friendships with all the other clubs in the League, and maybe more club tours?”
Social Eyes FC would like to thank everyone at Huddersfield Town FC, especially Town’s Disability Co-Coordinator Isaac Keighley.
The guys are back in action in the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League at Goals Sheffield on Sunday, 20th January 2019.
While the football group were on their visit our healthy eating group got busy cooking lunch.💚🥦🍲💚

Tuesday 13th November 2018.
Today was the opening day of our latest venture, The Social Stop Café.
Based within the Wickersley Methodist Church, the diners today were bathed in sunshine as they tucked into Sweet potato and tomato soup; jacket potatoes with assorted fillings; sandwiches and for after’s scones or fresh strawberry and cream cake.
The opening day was well attended and we are sure this will build week on week.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with every customer agreeing that the food was excellent both in its preparation and presentation.
Pastor Wayne Ashton joined us for lunch with some of his parishioners.
Social Eyes Rotherham would very much like to thank the church community for making this venture possible.
See you all next Tuesday!!
Monday 12th November.
Monday is our weekly visit to the farm within Wathwood Hospital. A feeding and petting session with the pygmy goats, donkeys and alpacas was followed by a warm drink in the superb café onsite.
The garden centre, farm and café are all open to the general public on a Saturday and Sunday but closed during the week when it is used by the patients at Wathwood for rehabilitation and therapy. Definitely worth a visit one weekend and with any luck you will have a guided tour by Ian McDermott who is the horticultural lead. Ian is a 30 year veteran of learning disability and is assisted by John & Alan. The site is at present gearing up to its Christmas fayre in December. More of that nearer the time…….
